Building people-friendly streets in Sheffield

Sheffield is preparing for more pedestrianised streets to deliver walking-friendly environments for its residents and boost local business. Research by Living Streets shows that pedestrianisation benefits business, with those who walk or cycle to shops spending more money.

One area in Sheffield that has seen significant transformation is Castlegate, a historically important part of the city that had fallen into decline. Pedestrianisation of Castlegate, along with a vibrant urban planting scheme, has transformed the area, attracting greater footfall and new development.

We speak with businesses in Castlegate to see how the city’s pedestrianisation projects are creating better places for locals, and how that’s boosting pounds spent.
